Page System Limitations System limitations The recording system in your MiniDisc recorder is radically different from those used in cassette and DAT decks and is characterized by the limitations described below. Note, however, that these limitations are due to the inherent nature of the MD recording system itself and not to mechanical causes. Your computer would obviously need an optical output. I have the MZ-R It came with the optical cable. I have a SoundBlaster Live card with digital input and output. What do I need on my computer so that I can connect my digital out to the optical cable which connects to the MD? This MD device is great.
I use it for real-time recording, to sample everyday life, etc. I use it with a little stereo mic Sony ecm-ds70p and sound quality is a. And for the 1x recording, it doesnt seem so bad to me since the thing detects the tracks. You can just let it go.
I understand it can be annoying for people using it as a walkman. People, sony now has 32X recording for minidiscs…get with the program. Real time recording is NOT an issue. To correct a few posts. The supplied USB to Minidisc adaptors are nothing more than econo sound cards. There is an analog version that should never have shipped as well as a TOSlink version which should have always been shipped instead of the pointless analog unit.
The biggest enemy to Minidisc is the real-time recording issue. If not directly, thru an adaptor. They would much rather just make a copy of the original CD on their PC for the car, or transfer MP3s to CD for the car in the event they are replacing music they own on analog cassette.
I needed something portable for me to record high quality sound. The MZ-R70 is incredibly good. Some of the features like the mono recording are not available on the Onkyo MD player I use and believe me I use it a lot.
MD players offer far more sophisticated filtering and I regularly convert ordinary tapes to MDs. Older Sonys were always uncompetitive on battery life. This model is nearly 2 years old, newer ones are better still. Similarly, MD is fairly well established in Japan, and to a certain extent in Europe. It took about 5 copy generations before the accumulated ATRAC compression artefacts started to be noticeable.
For most people, recording from most sources, plugging in an optical cable and recording using ATRAC will not cause any noticeable loss. Thanks for the input. I decided to go for the Sony MZ-R37 since it was cheaper and had 40 sec anti-skip. Oh yeah when the label says Windows or better, buy a Mac.
Since the MD literati are hanging out here, I decided to take the plunge after reading the article, but I want to spend a little less than what the MZ-R70 reviewed costs. I really plan to use the MD while I run to work so I need to know if either anti-skip really works well enough for my purposes.
Forgot a verb below i[. There are MD drives that transfer at 5X speed. I am however excited about DataPlay i just hope they use something other than MP3 format. Because of the way ATRAC works either through lack of processing power as 56 said, or by design from Sony you will never be able to record faster than real time. Copying tracks over from your hard drive, even with USB dongles and special software is never going to happen faster than b[.
I think you are all fools for leaving the house. Sure, the wheelbarrow and car batteries kill portability, but it sounds schwank.
I violently shook my new for two minutes straight and I could NOT make it skip. Thanks again for the excellent article. The three main reasons I enjoy and use minidisc are related to my shortwave radio monitoring hobby.
This is absolutely perfect for referencing radio station IDs and other details, minute-by-minute. My home deck has a PS-2 keyboard port that makes the data input easy.
But so do b[. I am not claiming that MD is better than tape just because it is digital. It is better because, well, it is better. MD does not suffer from wow and flutter, tape hiss or the restricted bandwidth of audio tape. You may like tape compression but that does not make it sound better. With respect to vinyl, well, people will try to tell you that dollar monster cables make a massive difference too. Audiofiles are the equivalent of hard core Apple lovers in that their perceptions have nothing to do with reality.
Anyone who claims that vinyl is better than CD will also claim that their tube amp is better than a MOSFET or similar solid state system just because they have some magical fairy dust sprinkled on them. Most of the time they just like the distortion effects of tubes which is valid but does not mean that they are more accurate. Most humans cannot hear above maybe 12kHz or so unless you are twelve years old and most speakers cannot really reproduce much above that.
Try using a high pass filter in Sound Forge and peel off everything below say, 14 kHz and see how well you can hear it. Saying you need anything above 20kHz is pretty damn ridiculous unless you are buying a stereo for your dog. This whole 96kHz push for audio is strictly a way to sell more kit. DTS anyone? If you want to change a few songs in the middle of an MD, do you need to redo the whole disk? When TR reviews a processor, the motherboard, heatsink, video card, etc. So why not tell us about the speakers, amp, headphones, etc.
Pretty good idea. I haven't tried one out myself yet, but it seems like a cool idea and is significantly smaller than a Creative Jukebox.. About the only thing i'ld be concerned with would be battery life. Oh, and as to cassette tape — what kind of idiot would even remotely compare minidisc to tape? I have to guess that this is coming from folks who have never used minidisc. No comparision at all. Completely not comparable a all. Comparing it to Flash based options is more fair since it has similar features, i.
RW instead of read only. MD kicks major ass as a portable recording medium. Unlike Flash based players, mini-disc is actually useable for field recording, mastering, live recording, etc. I use mini-disc exclusively as my mastering medium which rocks so much over DAT. Folks who are saying that a portable MP3 based CDR system is better obviously do not need a portable MD recorder since they are not recording on the fly. The fact that it is nearly infinitely re-recordable is actually majorly important.
So basically, if you make your own tunes, records sounds in the field or are away from your PC, minidisc is awesome. Liberating even.
But, of course, I listen to 80kbps MP3s, so what do I know. Its fantastic. I think portable minidisc b[. All I want to say is—each to his or her own. For the way I like to do things, I love MiniDisc. It sounds great. As long as we realize there are reasons people make the choices they do.
Actually MD is like a CD only for pre-recorded discs. Skipping is caused by movement of the optical block i. A friend of mine was going to purchase a Rio for herself, then decided to go with an MZ-R I bought one of the original Nomads parallel port , and I can rip, encode and upload a CD in under 30 minutes.
It takes me about twenty minutes to fill the thing, and I rip everything a 80kbps so the 64MB gives me about minutes, which is 2 CDs or close to it. And the ability to have that really senitive stereomike is quite a treat, works great. Still, 1x is still not that much, especially as most of you do as i do. Having music going just about all the time when infront of the comp.
The two most needed features for MD: Faster than 1X recording from comp. The beauty of MD is you can record from anything anywhere anytime—so sweet. Try doing that with an MP3 player. There are tradeoffs for all the portable dealies, but I think MD is the best for now. The waiting is the hardest part. I still think the Rio Volt, like any CD player, is too bulky to be useful for me—I want to slip it in my pocket and fuggedaboudit, not lug it around in my hand.
OK, I'm done abbreviating every other word. Granted, this is of no matter to Type search above and then hit Enter. Look retro to you? Battery life The battery system on the R is pretty simple, and battery life is generally good. It delivers about 3 hours of recording time or 6. Charging up usually takes a little over 3 hours. Fits in the palm of your hand. And you thought RAM was cheap! However, Minidiscs have that protective plastic casing which provides a layer of stability for the disc, making it less prone to the vibrations that cause skipping.
Portable Minidisc recorders all record at 1X speed. The R packs a digital cable out of the box, probably your best option for recording, but also has the ability to record off a traditional single-plug stereo cable. Those of you with massive CD collections will certainly appreciate the ability to record directly from a stereo, rather than having to rip everything first. Sound quality and compression This is where I pretend to be a hard-core audiophile, having ears and speakers good enough to pick apart audio created using various recording methods, or something.
As with most audio compression schemes, ATRAC is lossy, which means that there is necessarily some loss in quality. The question is, are your ears and equipment good enough to notice?

Anonymous 19 years ago Wow, finally a place to ask stupid questions on what now appears to be an obsolete bit of technology. Anonymous 19 years ago The reason that you cant play the MDs on the R70 is, maybe, because you record on the R in LongPlay, and R70 does not support that.
